Managing deforestation risks in your supply chain

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) aims to prevent deforestation by ensuring products sold in the EU are deforestation-free and comply with environmental and human rights laws. To achieve compliance, companies must implement strict supply chain traceability, which requires collecting and verifying detailed data on the origin and impact of sourced commodities. Under the regulation, both companies and their first-tier suppliers are responsible for providing the information needed to meet due diligence obligations.

Compliance is challenging for companies sourcing any of the seven commodities currently regulated under the EUDR—timber, rubber, palm oil, soy, cocoa, coffee, and cattle. The regulation enforces a three-step due diligence process: verifying product origins, assessing deforestation risks, and maintaining thorough documentation. As global deforestation concerns grow, additional commodities may be added to the regulation, further increasing complexity for companies already navigating a broad range of regulatory obligations.

Risks of non-compliance with EUDR

Failing to comply with the EU Deforestation Regulation can expose businesses to significant risks, including:

Operational disruptions
Non-compliance can result in supply chain delays and enforcement actions, including fines of up to 4% of annual global turnover.
Increased production costs
Remedying non-compliance can be resource-intensive, requiring audits, documentation updates & potential reformulation or re-sourcing of products to meet regulatory standards.
Loss of goods
Non-compliant products may be withheld from the EU market, confiscated, recalled, or destroyed—resulting in direct material losses and wasted inventory.
Restricted market access
Companies that fail to meet EUDR obligations risk temporary exclusion from the EU market and may also lose eligibility for public procurement opportunities.
Reputational damage
Publicized violations and supply chain scrutiny can damage brand credibility, erode investor confidence, and hinder ESG performance.
